Tagline: Witness a battle no one has ever seen
User review: 6.7
PlotSet in the present where a group of ruthless gangsters, an unknown woman and an escaped convict have met, unwittingly, in The Forest of Resurrection, the 444th portal to the other side. Their troubles start when those once killed and buried in the forest come back from the dead, with the assistance of the evil Sprit that has also come back, come back from ages past, to claim his prize. The final standoff between Light and Dark has never been so cunning, so brutal and so deadly. This is where old Japanese Samurai mysticism meets the new world of the gangster and the gun. Gruesome, bloody and positively bold. Written by Cinema_Fan
Movie Trivia In the scene where Tak Sakaguchi's character holds a pistol in his mouth, the director originally called for him to rack the slide with his teeth. He tried this, and broke a tooth. One of the zombies was played by a dentist, and fixed it for him.
In the aftermath of a few of the zombie fights, several zombies' butts are on fire. Director Ryûhei Kitamura did this on purpose, because he just thought it was funny.
The cast, crew, and director (who call themselves Team Versus) had so much fun making this film that director Ryûhei Kitamura purposely filmed the movie with no ending, with hopes that they would be able to make a sequel. The DVD has proved to be a cult success in both the U.S. and Japan, so Japanese film companies have green-lit the sequel and given it (supposedly) an exponentially higher budget. Team Versus plans on principal photography in mid-2005.
Video game producer-director Hideo Kojima (of "Metal Gear" fame) was an extra in the film. Kitamura, as a friend, was later handpicked to direct Kojima's remake of "Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes." Versus is attributed to heavily influencing the sword-fighting scenes in the game.
Movie GoofupsIncorrectly regarded as goofs: One of the detectives says (in the subtitled version) that he was trained at FBI HQ at Langley. Langley is the headquarters of the CIA, not the FBI. This fits the character, though, who seems to lie about his abilities throughout the movie.
Crew or equipment visible: The first time the main character encounters zombies in hand to hand combat, a rope harness can be seen pulling the zombie back towards the tree.
Crew or equipment visible: When the car arrives to pick the two prisoners up (at the beginning of the film) the camera crew and their equipment are reflected in the car's window when one guy opens the door.
Movie Quotes[after kicking away a severed zombie head] Prisoner KSC2-303: I'll play with you later. [Shooting someone in the gut] Head Yakuza: Die slowly, okay? We don't want you coming back alive on us. Girl: You can't just hurt people for no reason! Prisoner KSC2-303: A lot of people are better off dead. Girl: That's not for you to judge! Prisoner KSC2-303: What're you, a preacher? Girl: I can't remember anything that happened before I got here. Prisoner KSC2-303: Yeah, right. Girl: How about you? Why were you in prison? Prisoner KSC2-303: Well, I was... Girl: You don't remember either? Prisoner KSC2-303: I, uh, forget things easily. Girl: Oh... you, too! Undead Thug: You'll need an army to kill me. I'll give you untold power... in death! [after putting his fist through someone's chest] Undead Thug: Did that hurt? Undead Thug: Human life is only for an instant. Driver: Are you okay, officer? Fake Cop: [shoots him] Don't call me officer, asshole. Prisoner KSC2-303: What's all this got to do with me? Girl: It's your destiny. Fighter: You can't hit me! I have five hundred times faster reflexes then Mike Tyson! Prisoner KSC2-303: Don't worry about me. I never lose. Prisoner KSC2-303: There's nothing left to destroy in this world. Now take me to the other side... brother! Undead Thug: Why is nothing happening? Fighter: You'll never hit me with a bullet that slow. Villain: Because you interrupted me, I had to wait 500 years for that girl to reincarnate - it sucked. Prisoner KSC2-303: I didn't mean to save you. They just pissed me off. Prisoner KSC2-303: I'd rather die than live with you. Villain: Then die. [shoots Prisoner KSC2-303 in the head] Cop with Barrett: You wish to challenge me? The master of the martial arts? The fighter? Crazy yakuza with amulet: So, shall I give you some time to rest? Like forever? Prisoner KSC2-303: [Speaking to the yakuza] On your way to a party? Or are you trying to promote hoodlums? Prisoner KSC2-303: Here's the thing, I'm a feminist. Girl: If you did something like that, you're no different from those men. Prisoner KSC2-303: They're bastards, I'm not. Prisoner KSC2-303: Don't touch my girl, fucking asshole. Crazy yakuza with amulet: They were definitely dead... but they came back to life! Yakuza with glasses: So?
